Benchmarking is a tool to compare the energy usage of your building(s) to the energy usage of similar type buildings. You are able to evaluate how much more or less energy efficient your building is compared to the average for that building type.
To be able to benchmark your energy usage, start by calculating your building’s EUI (Energy Use Intensity). This is done by dividing the total energy usage of your building by the square footage. You can then compare your EUI to data for similar buildings, such as office buildings or healthcare facilities, in the Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS).
Benchmarking also provides insight on the potential amount of energy savings that are possible in a building or buildings. For example, if you have multiple buildings, it allows you to focus energy conservation efforts on the buildings that have the highest EUIs.
